In knitting, steeking is a shortcut used to knit garments such as cardigans in the round without interruption for openings or sleeves until the end. After completing a tube, a straight line is cut along the center of a column of stitches, to make room for an opening or place to attach another piece.

Skill level required: Adventurous beginner to intermediate knitter. Must be comfortable casting on, binding off, knitting, purling, and know how to knit in the round on a small circumference.

Here is what you will learn in this class:

  • how to reinforce your steek
  • how to cut your steek

Materials supplied by Yarn Twisters:

  • pattern for coffee cup cozy (this will be emailed to you upon conformation of registration of the class)
  • detailed instructions on reinforcing and cutting your steek

Materials supplied by students:

  • approx. 25g each, 2 high contrast colours of non-superwash worsted weight yarn (ie. Cascade 220)
  • 3.5mm (US 4) and 4mm (US 6) needles for knitting in the round, small circumference, 40" circular for magic loop or double pointed needles
  • darning needle
  • stitch markers
  • crochet hook to reinforce the steek
  • sharp scissors for cutting the steek
  • pen or pencil (if desired to take notes)

Please note, this class involves the steeking portion only, you must come to the class with your piece finished, blocked and dried and ready to steek.
